subevent compilation

These are referenced in the background history, but I decided to take these specific subevents out for easier reference. Note: These are the extra subevents, not the main ones.

those who act in shadow

part one. Alvin witnesses a young woman named Katte enter the inn and seems to recognize something about her. After two men come in and take her off, he follows and interferes. Jude comes in and after he takes her to the inn, Alvin wonders if she could be one of “them.” The following morning, they discover Katte’s body by the pier. He explained to Jude that he suspected she was a member of the Rats, the female spy organization of the Aktau clan of Auj Oule.

part two. In Fenmont Jude and Leia talk to Eldin who reveal that he thought he recognized Alvin and while he didn’t know him personally, his wife and him knew the woman he had been living with: Mink. After a brief description, Leia recognized her as Presa and Eldin had figured Mink hadn’t been her real name. He wanted to talk to Alvin about it to make sure he knew her real identity. They had received reports her true identity as a member of the rats. Presa had been an Auj Oule spy under the cover of a receptionist and this hints at when they started seeing each other. Leia and Jude debate about whether telling him and decide not to.

part three. In Nia Khera, Alvin receives a letter from the elder. He says someone had found it at the base of the Hallowmont and that it had been addressed to "Al." Alvin takes it.
"Dear Al,

I never expected that you would return to me.

As someone who has endured betrayal her whole life, to have my expectations betrayed so sweetly was, for once, a great kindness. But if you’re reading this letter now... It means that in choosing to live my life as Presa, I have chosen to betray you. I am truly sorry."

Alvin runs off after reading the letter back to the top of the Hallowmount. The group chases after and when they arrive, with no prompt whatsoever, he tells the story. Her team had been wiped out because of the information he had acquired by deceiving her. Yet the last thing she said to him was that she worried about him—the guy who ruined everything for her. She had known he would go back to them and he couldn’t believe it. The group leaves ahead of him to give him so time, and he vows, "I’m going to keep at it. I’ll protect all that you’ve given me." He walks a few steps, turns around, and says, "Goodbye, Jill. That was always my favorite name, you know."

alvin and derrick

Jude and Alvin visit Derrick at the clinic and when Derrick comments that Jude is okay, Alvin responds that of course he is since he's been with him the whole time. Derrick then dismisses Jude to speak with Alvin alone. On the question of whether Alvin was keeping Jude hostage, he answers that he's protecting him from Exodus and, in a rather dubious manner, states that they are friends who trusted one another. He then tells Derrick that Jude is a lot more grown-up more than he realizes. When Derrick continues to say that he's just a rebellious child, Alvin again counters that while he may not be in the rebellious phase yet, Jude is not a child. He then continues to say how hard it must be for Derrick to be a dad—sacrifice so much only to have the kid grow up and leave you. When Derrick says he knows and and accepts that, Alvin leaves one last comment that that was how he always has been in and how he can see why Jude became such the honor student. Jude asks Alvin what they were talking about, but he lies saying it was about old people diseases to make him disinterested. Jude let's it go and when he leaves, Alvin comments how there's still some kid him in after all.

infiltrate the research center

Alvin had actually been able to bring back a protoype when he had first infiltrated the lab, but didn’t know at the time that Teepo had been a third generation booster. He had the blueprints but threw them away since he didn’t understand it. But it’s clear (and pointed out) that he knew what/who Elize and Teepo were when he first met them, but his job with the boosters had been long done then and his job at that time was escorting Jude and Milla. He stresses he was being a pro.

sidenote: This is only mentioned in the character guide for Wingul, but apparently Alvin shot Wingul's best friend during this infiltration. Is this important? Possibly if there was ever a Wingul and they point it out. Whether Alvin knew who he was at the time or not, however, I have no idea. So this comment may be later edited if I find more.

mother and child

part one. They pay a visit to Alvin’s mom, Leticia, for the first time. He explains that she’s ill and without a father or any siblings, he has Isla look after her when he’s not around. Leticia wakes up and greets them, and it’s soon clear that her mind is trapped in another time. She calls Alvin "Alfred" and talks about him while addressing Alvin as his cousin, Balan, a role he plays along with. When she asks about Alfred, Alvin replies that he’s at boarding school. She then comments how he must be crying as he was a shy and lonely young boy. Alvin says he’s fine and she remembers that he would be back during the break. Then they would go on a trip on a big boat, to which Alfred is looking forward to. She continues to say he’s such a kind and thoughtful boy.

After the exchange, Alvin explains that being away from home has been tough and that his dad died. He says she wanted to return home to where they used to live. Milla comments that he had been doing this all for his mother, and Alvin affirms, in a somewhat dry tone. When Jude tries to tell him he doesn’t have to do what he’s doing, Alvin tells him to spare the sympathy that "it’s all rotten in the end" and that "it’s enough to drive me crazy myself."

Outside they see Isla. She and Alvin converse in private. Again she asks him to not say anything to Yurgen (in the subtle "we’re similar you know" kind of way). She also tells him she doesn’t want to look after Leticia and that she wants him to tell Exodus to leave her alone. But he says he can’t since Exodus makes the medicine she needs and that Isla is the only one who can prescribe it. Isla continues to protest but Alvin denies, continuing to hold the information about her against her. ie, Alvin is being a coldhearted bastard because he needs to place his own interests (his mom) first.

Going back in and speaking to her gives a few more things, such as Alfred loving peach pie and being a sensitive boy. There’s also a mention that he’s taking care of cats named "Jude" and "Milla." There’s a moment where it seems that Leticia is having a moment of lucidity because she tells Alvin (thinking that he’s Balan) that he’ll be all right no matter what he does.

part two. Sometime after Alvin learns of his mother's death, he has the chance to return to Xian Du to check on his mom’s old house. Isla sees them and comes in with them. Her body had already been removed and buried. A part of him is actually relieved and feels a bit guilty. Then he confronts Isla about the truth of Leticia's death. He says that his mother knew that Isla was mixing poison into her food. Isla runs out and they chase after. She’s at Labari Hollow on the bridge. When questioned, Alvin answers for her. His mother had been holding her back and she couldn’t get her happy ending. At the question of whether her mother suffered and seeing she hadn’t, he was actually all right about it. In his mother’s last letter, she told him that she wasn’t long for the world and to free Isla. Isla doesn’t believe them and falls (or jumps) from the bridge. They bring her back to Xian Du, but she’s psychologically damaged. Yergen is there to always be there for her. Alvin lets them stay in the house and retrieves the gun belt to take back home.

balan's bet

They ask Balan about Alvin’s childhood, but Alvin threatens he’d be dead to him forever if he does. They take a bet and Balan asks them to find a light-leaf clover. They converse about how gambling is a proud tradition of Elympions. As they race off, Alvin mutters how this is why he hates gambling. They eventually find the clover, much to Alvin’s dismay who thought they were extinct. Some soldiers appear (another bet) and they fight. Alvin has an idea but tells them to return. Balan tells the story about the clover. Alvin had the idea of making a crown of Light-Leaf Clovers for his mother’s birthday. He came up with the idea of painting normal clovers, but he gave it to his mother before the paint was dry. It wound up in her hair, and he was so surprised he bawled. He buried his face into her hair and ended up with paint on his face. Balan then mentions her peach pies. Alvin tells Balan to always keep her memories alive and he replies that he would never forget her or Alvin.

rumors of elympios (part two)

At the apartment in Trigleph, they hear about the Svent family and the new patriarch. They hear the gossip of the old one having died in the Zenethra accident, including wife, son, and younger brother. The heirs fought for the title. Jude asks Alvin and he tells him that they’re pretty big, important family. Gilland was the younger brother and head of a smaller line of the family. He always resented his father and family because of the position of succession. When his father died in the accident, that left Gilland a chance. Alvin says he tried to take advantage and legally steal his claim to the leadership. Using the Svent name, he created Exodus to push the Otherworld Reactor Plan so he could claim the title for himself when he returned. If they hadn’t stopped Gilland, it was like he would have been killed. Jude asks him if he’ll return, and Alvin pauses before saying no. As the ladies said, he has no place and he’s been away too long. He has no place in the noble elite. So they’re all stuck with him.

sidenote: In the story "The Day Milla Maxwell Was Born" it actually implies that a general who happened to be on the Zenethra first created Exodus and Gilland was trying to subsume him and take over. Alvin's role in that was at the time he was gathering blackmail information about the guy. Clearly this conflicts with what the game states (it does say specifically that Gilland "created" Exodus) so whether that was a translation error or...something else, NO IDEA. But yeah. In terms of play, I'll be going with the English game version for consistency's sake.
